Overnight, the United States carried out a major operation in Venezuela that included airstrikes and other military actions. U.S. officials say the operation led to the detention of President Nicolás Maduro and his spouse.

In Caracas, residents reported blasts, low-flying aircraft, and widespread fear. Parts of the capital experienced power cuts, and authorities issued emergency alerts and travel advisories in response to the unrest.

Venezuelan authorities condemned the intervention, labeling it an act of external aggression and announcing a nationwide state of emergency. Opposition figures, by contrast, welcomed the development and framed it as the end of Maduro’s rule.

International response

Reaction around the world has been split. A number of governments, including those of Russia, Iran, Cuba, and Colombia, along with several leaders in Latin America and Europe, criticized the U.S. action as a breach of Venezuela’s sovereignty and called for restraint and renewed dialogue.

The UN Secretary-General urged all sides to step back from further confrontation and to adhere to the principles of the UN Charter.

Broader geopolitical stakes

The intervention has reignited global debate over the limits of military action, the protection of national sovereignty, and adherence to international law. It is also drawing attention to how the crisis could reshape regional stability and global energy dynamics, given Venezuela’s substantial oil reserves.
