Echinacea

Echinacea helps reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms, such as congestion, runny nose, sore throat, headache, weakness or chills. Native Americans have used it for centuries to treat respiratory tract infections. Echinacea would also prevent the flu.

Echinacea is best consumed orally, in the form:

  • Leave to infuse in boiling water for 10 min, 1 g of dried roots. To be taken 1 to 6 times a day.
  • Boil 1 g of echinacea roots in 1 cup of water for 5-10 min. Up to 3 cups per day.
  •  Take 3 ml to 4 ml of echinacea, 3 times a day.

 

Black Elderberries

Black Elderberries is an effective natural remedy for treating the flu. A study carried out in the 90s shows that subjects treated against the flu with an extract of black elderberries had observed an improvement in their condition after 2 days, compared to 6 days for the group treated with a placebo. Black elderberry has also been recognized as an effective way to prevent colds.

Black elderberry can be eaten in the form of flowers or berries. There are ready-to-use preparations of black elderberries. The following indications are made with elderflowers:

  • Infuse 3 to 5 g of dried flowers in 150 ml of boiling water for 10 to 15 min. Drink three cups a day.
  • Take 1.5 to 3 ml of black elderberry fluid extract per day.
  • Tincture (1:5, g/ml). Take 2.5 to 7.5 ml per day.

 

Andrographis 

Andrographis has been used for several hundred years in the treatment of fever and respiratory infections. It is a plant that is not found in raw form in Western countries, where it can be obtained in the form of tablets or capsules containing 4 to 6% of andrographolide, one of the active substances of andrography.

 

At present, it is still recommended in the treatment of respiratory tract infections such as the flu or the common cold. It is advisable to take 400 mg of standardized extract of andrographis containing 4-6% andrographolide, 3 times a day in case of flu or cold.

 

Eucalyptus 

Eucalyptus has beneficial effects on inflammation of the respiratory tract. It helps relieve cold and flu symptoms, including cough and sore throat.

Internally, eucalyptus is used as:

  • Infuse 2 to 3 g of dried eucalyptus leaves in 150 ml of boiling water for 10 minutes, at the rate of 2 cups per day.
  • Tincture (1:5). Take 10 to 15 ml, 2 times a day.
  • Take 2 to 6 drops per day of eucalyptus essential oil on a neutral lozenge. This use is not recommended for young children or pregnant women.
  • Pour into an inhaler, 4 to 6 drops of essential oil in 150 ml of boiling water. Repeat the process up to three times a day.

 

Garlic

As surprising as it may seem, garlic is also an effective remedy for colds and flu symptoms since it helps treat respiratory tract infections. In this case, it can be consumed in different ways:

  • Consume the equivalent of 4 cloves of garlic (16 g) per day to protect against colds.
  • Take 2 to 4g of dried garlic powder, 3 times a day to prevent colds.
