A Brief History of Bingo
Bingo is a game that seems to have been around for all of our lives, the local bingo halls are filled with people who have been playing the game for most of their lives. Nowadays you’ll be more likely to find somebody playing at Barbados Bingo on their smartphone than their local bingo hall if they know the bingo rules for online gaming that is. As with anything, this change doesn’t have to be a bad thing as it shows how the game has evolved and kept its relevance in the modern world. The roots of where bingo started, date back a lot longer than most realise, with the earliest game recorded around 1530 in Italy!
Originally known as Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia, the game came from Italy around 1530 and it still remains popular to this day. Soon, the popularity of ‘del lotto’ spread across Europe, eventually becoming a popular game amongst the wealthy members of French society around the 1700s. This led to the game becoming known as ‘Le Lotto’ in France. The game even found itself in Germany, however unlike other countries in Europe, it was used in schools to help students better grasp language, spelling and maths! It came over to Great Britain around the 1800s and was a popular game among towns and cities. Eventually it managed to cross the Channel to the United States and was widely beloved as a fair game entitled ‘Beano’.
The First Bingo
In the United States, the game was popular amongst carnivals and fairs. This meant that it was not well known amongst those who lived in cities such as New York. A man named Edwin S. Lowe first encountered Beano in a tent in Georgia. Seeing the potential for money, he decided to take the idea back to Long Island, New York with him. Lowe reworked the game so that it was played on print cards, it was a popular game amongst his friends and family. One evening, a friend got so excited while playing that they exclaimed ‘Bingo!’ by accident instead of ‘Beano’. This simple accident led to the creation of the name which we all know and love. Lowe saw the opportunity and rebranded the game with a bigger possible winning combination and new name, Bingo!
As bingos popularity took off amongst people, with soldiers playing games of bingo during the Great War, it wasn’t long before the game became a mainstay. While its popularity has wavered over time, in recent years the game of bingo has experienced something of a resurgence with the new online bingo games. Since the invention of the internet so much in our world has changed and evolved, in order to remain relevant in this ever changing environment bingo also had to adapt with the times. With the ability to play at any time, no matter where you are, it is no surprise that many people find themselves drawn to playing online bingo on their devices.
Bingo has come a long way since being known as Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia in Italy during 1530. What is amazing is that the core premise of the game remains intact, the simplicity is perhaps the biggest reason for the game’s longevity and popularity.
