Adobe Unveils AI-Powered Video Editing Features

After nearly a year of anticipation, Adobe has officially launched its generative AI-powered Generative Extend feature, which allows users to seamlessly expand video clips to fit their editing timeline.

New AI Features Announced at NAB 2025

Alongside Generative Extend, Adobe introduced several AI-driven tools, including Media Intelligence, a smart search feature that identifies clips based on their content. Other notable updates include AI-powered caption translation supporting 27 languages and new capabilities to enhance log and raw footage without requiring LUTs.

In After Effects, users can now access advanced 3D tools, HDR monitoring, and high-performance playback improvements. Meanwhile, Frame.io subscribers will see a significant increase in cloud storage—ranging from five to 15 times more, depending on their plan—along with beta access to searchable transcriptions and enhanced text markup tools.

How Generative Extend Works

Generative Extend, powered by Adobe’s Firefly AI, is compatible with 4K, vertical video, and audio. However, it currently has a 10-second extension limit, aligning with industry standards for AI-generated video. Other AI platforms, like OpenAI’s Sora, offer similar time restrictions, with additional costs for extended clips.

The tool is easy to use—simply select the cursor with stars, drag the clip’s edge, and the AI fills in the missing frames via cloud processing. Adobe highlights its usefulness for fixing imperfect shots, such as when a subject looks away unexpectedly or a b-roll scene needs slight extension.

However, Generative Extend is not included for free with a Creative Cloud subscription. After an initial free trial, users will need to spend Generative Credits, similar to other Firefly-based tools. Pricing varies based on video format, frame rate, and resolution, with different Creative Cloud plans offering varying credit allowances.

AI-Driven Media Search: Media Intelligence

Adobe is also rolling out Media Intelligence, a new AI-powered search tool that functions similarly to Google Photos or Lightroom. Editors can search for clips using keywords related to objects, locations, camera angles, and metadata (such as the shooting date or camera type). Additionally, the tool enables dialog-based searches, making it easier to locate specific spoken lines within video projects.

AI-Generated Content and Commercial Use

Like other Firefly-powered tools, Generative Extend’s output is labeled with Content Credentials metadata, ensuring transparency regarding AI-generated content. Adobe also assures that its AI models are trained in a way that makes them commercially safe, reducing potential intellectual property concerns.
