All the latest on the Peaky Blinders movie

There is probably never going to be a seventh series of “Peaky Blinders.” The quintessentially British television show, which went on to be a hit all over the world, came to an end with a feature-length episode that aired at the beginning of April this year. If you’re reading this article, we’ll assume that you’re a “Peaky Blinders” fan, and you already know everything that happened in that episode. If you haven’t seen it yet, you might not want to read on, as we’ll be venturing into spoiler territory.

While “Peaky Blinders” might be done as a television show (for now), it’s not done as an entertainment property. We were promised a movie when the TV show came to an end, and we’ll be getting one. Everything went quiet for a while after the final episode, which made some fans worry about whether the feature film would still go ahead, but now we have proof that it is. This news comes straight from Cillian Murphy, so in “Peaky Blinders” terms, that’s about as close to getting news straight from the horse’s mouth as possible.

Here’s everything we know about the film as of right now.

Still in the writer’s room

Before a film can be made, a script has to be produced. The “Peaky Blinders” movie hasn’t gone in front of cameras yet because there isn’t a script – but there’s one in development, and Murphy says it’s close to being finalised. The fact that the film isn’t quite complete would normally be a good reason to worry that we might be years away from seeing the movie, but Murphy expects to film it next year ahead of a potential release in 2024.

Murphy has a lot of confidence for a man who, by his own admission, hasn’t yet read any of the script. However, he was able to share a little more information. He says the plot of the movie will pick up where the television series left off, so fans needn’t worry about a reboot or reimagining of the already well-established room. There’s also a suggestion that the film isn’t intended to be a case of “one and done” for the “Peaky Blinders” cast, as Murphy said that he’s “there” so long as there are more stories to be told.

A future on television?

You’ll notice that, at the beginning of this article, we spoke of there “probably” not being another series of “Peaky Blinders” in the pipeline and the television show being done “for now.” That’s because while the plan was for the show to definitively end when it did, things may have changed a little in the months that have passed since then. Cillian Murphy isn’t the only member of the “Peaky Blinders” team to have spoken to the press recently. Steven Knight, the creator and head writer of the show, has also been speaking to the press – and it sounds like he might have had a change of heart about what happens next.

Before we get into what Knight said about a (potential) future for “Peaky Blinders” as a television series, let’s look at what he said about the film. While confirming the same things Murphy said about the unfinished status of the script, he believes he’s close enough to being finished to say that filming will be able to begin in May 2023, which is consistent with Murphy’s earlier words. He also gave us an idea of the movie’s context – it will be set during the Second World War. This was guessable from the end of the TV show’s sixth season, but it’s now been confirmed by the man in charge. Knight says that he’s identified three true wartime stories that he’s weaved into the script but won’t say which stories they are.

Handing things over

Knight’s comments make it sound as if he intends to make the film and then be done with “Peaky Blinders,” as he has a new project lined up which will star Stephen Graham and examine the illegal bare-knuckle boxing scene in Victorian London. The departure of Knight, though, doesn’t mean the end of “Peaky Blinders.” The show’s creator is open to allowing the story to continue if there’s still an appetite for it among the public after the credits roll on the movie – he just won’t be part of it. He’s happy to hand over the reins to a new team – presumably one made up of people who’ve worked on the show before – and would like them to pick the story up again in the 1950s.

While he technically wouldn’t have a say in the matter of when the show was set if he completely handed over control to someone else, Knight’s wording makes it sound like he’d sketch out new stories and then pass them to someone else to finish, thus creating a new framework for the show he created and allowing someone else to build on it.

A continued appetite

In his interview, Steven Knight said several times that the “Peaky Blinders” franchise would continue “so long as there’s an appetite” for it. There’s very little doubt that such an appetite exists. We need only look at online casinos for evidence of that. The original “Peaky Blinders” casino game, which was released in 2021, performed so well at casino sites that Pragmatic Play has developed a sequel, which is scheduled for release at the end of this month. Casino operators are already moving to ensure that they can stock their sister sites with the game as soon as it’s released, and it seems likely to be one of the most popular games of its type in early 2023.

If you’re a “Peaky Blinders” fan, it looks like the future of this gritty drama about the past is in safe hands, and there’s more entertainment on the way – it’s just going to take a while to get there. If you’re not a fan of casino games and you’ve already re-watched the TV show so many times you can’t get any more out of watching it again, you’ll likely have to wait until mid-2024 to renew your acquaintance with these now-iconic characters.
