Amazon Enters the AI Chatbot Arena with “Metis”

Amazon is making waves in the AI industry with the announcement of two major developments: an advanced version of Alexa, known as “Remarkable Alexa,” and a new AI chatbot aimed at competing directly with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

This new chatbot will be browser-based, designed to provide basic text and image responses in a conversational manner. While Amazon has not officially named the chatbot, it is internally referred to as Metis, after the Greek deity of wisdom. Metis is powered by Amazon’s advanced AI model, Olympus, which is said to surpass the capabilities of their publicly available Titan model.

In a market filled with competitors like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Anthropic’s Claude, Meta’s Llama, and Perplexity.ai, Amazon faces the challenge of distinguishing itself. Entering the AI landscape later than its rivals, Amazon needs to offer something beyond just parity to stand out.

According to Business Insider, Amazon aims to use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) with Metis, enabling it to access and utilize real-time information beyond its training data. This means Metis could provide up-to-date details like stock prices or sports scores and offer sourced links for users to verify the information.

In addition to the upcoming AI enhancements for Alexa, Amazon announced in April 2023 a suite of proprietary AI technologies for companies to develop generative AI applications, similar to how Microsoft’s OpenAI’s GPT-4 powers Bing Chat.

The new chatbot is expected to launch in September 2024, with Amazon traditionally hosting a major Alexa and devices event each September for the past four years.
