Apple Adds Pregnancy Tracking in upcoming OS Updates

Apple Center

This fall, Apple’s OS updates will introduce pregnancy tracking features to its devices. Although briefly mentioned during the AI-centric WWDC presentation earlier this month, these updates could significantly benefit those needing additional support during pregnancy.

With iOS 18, watchOS 11, and iPadOS 18, users can log their pregnancy in the Health app, which will enhance the Cycle Tracking section on the Apple Watch, iPad, and iPhone. The updates include information about gestational age and notifications for high heart rates, a condition Apple notes is more common during pregnancy.

The app will also prompt users to log typical pregnancy symptoms, review any medication interactions, and complete a monthly mental health assessment to proactively address potential depression during and after pregnancy. Additionally, the iPhone will assess walking steadiness and notify users of increased fall risk, especially in the third trimester.

Apple recommends that pregnant users disable certain notifications, like cardio fitness alerts, due to the common decline in cardio fitness during pregnancy.

These new features expand on the existing Cycle Tracking section in the Health app, introduced in 2019. This section allows users to track their period dates and symptoms, predict fertile windows, and access educational content on fertility and ovulation.

While pregnancy tracking is a logical enhancement, it’s important to note the privacy implications of sharing sensitive data with a tech company. Apple assures users that the data is encrypted and that they have control over what information is added to the Health app and how long it is stored.
