Apple scraps Plans for In-House Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Chip Production

Not long ago we revealed here that Apple was preparing a new chip that would have included Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. That chip would allow the company to stop being tied to Broadcom, the company that supplies the Wi-Fi chip and Bluetooth chip for the iPhone.

However, as is being revealed, the company will have given up on that idea because it has become a challenge that is far from simple for the company, since making a combined chip is much more complicated than developing two separate chips, and a combo chip would mean that many adjustments had to be made to the iPhone.

Apple still has plans to complete development of its 5G modem chip that should replace the one made by Qualcomm, but the company seems to be having trouble getting around some of Qualcomm’s patents, and it still doesn’t have enough resources. The report further states that Apple is focusing its engineering resources on developing its Apple Silicon 3nm process node for TSMC, as updating the chipset is critical to making the products marketable.

Apple, therefore, is still expected to use chips from Qualcomm and Broadcom in the upcoming iPhone series. This information, which was shared on the social network Twitter, caused Broadcom’s shares to rise 2.2% and Qualcomm’s to rise 2.13% today, to the great relief of investors.
