Apple Unveils Next-Gen AirTag with Longer Range, Louder Alerts, and Smarter Finding

Apple has announced a refreshed version of AirTag, its popular item-tracking accessory, making it even simpler to locate everyday essentials. The updated AirTag delivers stronger Precision Finding, an extended Bluetooth range, and a significantly louder built-in speaker - all while keeping the same price as before.

Designed to work seamlessly with the Find My app, AirTag helps users track items like keys, wallets, luggage, backpacks, and more. Since its debut in 2021, people across the globe have shared real-world stories of recovering lost belongings, from misplaced musical instruments just in time for performances to bags containing critical medication. Built specifically for locating objects, AirTag also includes robust safeguards to prevent unwanted tracking.

At the heart of the new AirTag is Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, also used in the latest iPhones and Apple Watches. This upgrade allows Precision Finding to guide users to lost items from up to 50 percent farther away than the previous model, using a mix of visual cues, sound, and haptic feedback. A new Bluetooth chip further increases the detection range. For the first time, Precision Finding is also available on Apple Watch models starting from Series 9 and Ultra 2, enabling users to track items directly from their wrist.

The internal design has also been reworked to boost sound output. The new AirTag is about 50 percent louder, making it easier to hear from greater distances - ideal for locating items hidden under furniture or buried inside bags.

When an AirTag is outside Bluetooth range, the Find My network steps in. This privacy-focused, crowdsourced network of Apple devices can help relay an item’s approximate location back to its owner. The new AirTag also supports Share Item Location, an iOS feature that lets users temporarily share an item’s location with trusted third parties, such as airlines, to help recover delayed or lost luggage. More than 50 airlines already support this feature, which automatically expires after seven days or once the item is found.

Security remains a key focus. Location data is end-to-end encrypted, not stored on the AirTag itself, and accessible only to the owner. Apple has also included advanced protections against unwanted tracking, such as rotating Bluetooth identifiers and cross-platform alerts.

The new AirTag reflects Apple’s environmental goals as well, using a high percentage of recycled materials and fully fiber-based packaging. It keeps the same design as the original, ensuring compatibility with existing accessories.

Pricing remains unchanged at $29 for a single AirTag or $99 for a four-pack. Orders are now open on Apple’s website and app, with in-store availability and authorized reseller sales rolling out shortly.
