Asteroid 130 Elektra Moon: An Asteroid with three Moons
Scientists in Thailand have discovered an asteroid that has 3 moons. This is the first time in the universe that an asteroid has 3 moons. This celestial rock is 257 km wide and was first discovered in the 19th century. Now this unique asteroid has been identified as the first quadruple system in space. Scientists have named it 130 Electra after the Greek god.
Astronomers have discovered that this celestial rock has 3 small companion moons. Scientists have discovered 11 lakh asteroids, but till now it was not known that an asteroid also has satellites. Scientists say that 150 of these 1.1 million asteroids have at least one moon, but it is not always easy to find them.
‘Electra first discovered quadruple system’
Electra was first discovered in the year 1873 in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. After 130 years, the first moon of Electra was discovered. After this, in the year 2014, evidence was found about the second moon. Scientists found it very difficult to discover this asteroid because they are very small and have little light. In such a situation, if a small satellite is circling them, then it becomes lighter and the chances of its sighting also decrease.
The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand has made this rare discovery. The researchers wrote, ‘Electra is the first discovered quadruple system. This is a new discovery. The first moon of Electra is 6 km, the second 2 km and the recently found third moon is 1.6 km wide. The newly found moon is circling the asteroid from a distance of 340 km.

According to scientists, asteroids are rocks that revolve around the sun like a planet, but they are much smaller than planets in size. Most of the asteroids in our solar system are found in the asteroid belt in the orbit of Mars and Jupiter. Apart from this, they keep moving in the orbit of other planets and revolve around the sun along with the planet. About 4.5 billion years ago, when our Solar System was formed, such clouds of gas and dust that could not take the shape of a planet and were left behind, were transformed into these rocks i.e. asteroids. This is the reason that their shape is also not round like the planets. No two asteroids are alike.
