A Bank of America outage has caused some customers’ accounts to display a $0 balance. The issue began around 9:30 a.m. PST on Wednesday, according to Downdetector, and within 45 minutes, over 20,000 user complaints were logged. Many Bank of America customers have since shared screenshots of empty account balances.

One user on Twitter/X reported, “All my accounts suddenly show $0.00.” Another, on Downdetector, mentioned, “Five accounts show zero balance, over 20K! Been on hold for 30 minutes and they removed the chat function.”

The outage also seems to have affected Zelle, the digital payment network co-owned by Bank of America. A Reddit user shared, “I tried to do a Zelle payment and it said insufficient funds.” Other customers noted that the Bank of America website displayed a message warning that it couldn’t retrieve account balances.

Bank of America has not immediately responded to requests for comment, and the source of the outage remains unclear. The bank’s website is currently showing balances from the previous day, with a message advising customers to check their current balance later.

As of now, many users are regaining access to their accounts, leading to a drop in outage reports on Downdetector. Some customers have also noted that they were still able to make payments despite the issue.

One user on Downdetector reassured others by writing, “It’s just a display glitch. I talked to an agent and confirmed my balances. Everyone chill.”

UPDATE: In a statement to PCMag, Bank of America acknowledged the issue, saying, “Some clients are experiencing an issue accessing their accounts and balance information today. These issues are being addressed and have largely been resolved. We apologize for any inconvenience.” The cause of the outage remains unspecified.
