Bing Chat to display ads – What it means for users and advertisers

Anyone who knows Microsoft knows that sooner or later this was going to happen, and now we know that we won’t have to wait long to have ads on Bing Chat, their chatbot which is powered by ChatGPT.
A few weeks ago there were reports on Reddit that pointed in this direction. Recently, Reuters also reported that Microsoft would be in talks with an advertising agency to introduce advertising spaces in its chatbot. The publisher ended up confirming the information in a publication on its blog, where it admits to “exploring new solutions for advertisers, including our more than 7,500 Microsoft Start partner brands”.
Microsoft, however, guarantees that it wants to “continue to distribute content in a significant way in terms of traffic and revenue for partners”. On its blog, the company explains that it is exploring various solutions for displaying advertising on Bing Chat. One is to add a sponsored link at the end of the chatbot response, related to the subject raised by the user.
On Twitter, other ways of implementing advertising in Bing Chat were shared. This consists of embedding a hypertext link directly into the AI’s response, with an “advertisement” displayed next to it. It seems that each user has access to different versions of these advertising spaces.
“As the new Bing is in preview, there may be some variability in how it currently displays. We continue to explore new possibilities for ad experiences and will reveal more over time,” said Caitlin Roulston, Chief Communications Officer at Microsoft.
