Chinese AI Company DeepSeek Disrupts US Tech with Low-Cost, High-Performance Model

Chinese AI firm DeepSeek has made waves in the tech world by launching an AI model, R1, that combines high performance with ultra-low costs. The development has sent shockwaves through the US tech industry, with prominent investor Marc Andreessen dubbing it “AI’s Sputnik moment.” In response, US tech stocks took a hit, with Nvidia seeing an 11% drop in its stock price this morning.
A New Challenger in AI
DeepSeek’s app quickly rose to the top of the Apple App Store, surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT as the most downloaded free application. However, following a surge of registrations and reports of large-scale malicious attacks, possibly a DDoS attack, DeepSeek restricted access to users with mainland China phone numbers (+86). Google account logins may still work for users outside China.
DeepSeek’s interface looks remarkably similar to ChatGPT, with a knowledge cutoff set at October 2023. However, the real disruptor is the open-source model powering it. DeepSeek R1 is one of the most cost-efficient and high-performing AI models currently available, allowing developers to download and use it freely.
Performance and Pricing
Released on January 20, 2025, just months after its predecessor debuted in the fall of 2024, R1 rivals OpenAI’s GPT-o1 model, which was unveiled in September 2024. OpenAI touted GPT-o1 as a “new paradigm” in AI reasoning, capable of following complex chains of thought.
In terms of pricing, DeepSeek’s R1 is a game-changer:
- DeepSeek R1: $2.19 per 1 million output tokens.
- OpenAI GPT-o1: $60 per 1 million output tokens.
- Even OpenAI’s lightweight GPT-o1 mini costs $12 for the same volume.
The affordability of DeepSeek R1 has made it an attractive option for businesses and developers alike, and its open-source nature furthers its appeal.
Meta’s Take on Open Source Dominance
Meta, which has also embraced open-source AI with its Llama models, sees DeepSeek’s rise as a sign of open-source superiority. Yann LeCun, Meta’s chief AI scientist, dismissed fears of China surpassing the US in AI. “The correct reading is: ‘Open source models are surpassing proprietary ones,’” LeCun wrote on Threads.
Meta has reportedly launched four war rooms to analyze DeepSeek’s technology, focusing on its cost-cutting methods and the data sources it used for training.
Controversial Chips and Data Concerns
There is controversy surrounding the hardware used by DeepSeek. Founder Liang Wenfeng reportedly stockpiled Nvidia A100 chips before US export restrictions in September 2022. While the company claims R1 operates on Nvidia’s lower-capacity H800 chips, there are suspicions that banned A100 chips might still be in use, with some being smuggled into China in violation of sanctions.
Interestingly, DeepSeek’s efficiency-first approach to AI development may have been shaped by these restrictions, with the company focusing on resource optimization from the outset. This focus on efficiency also has the side benefit of reducing energy consumption, addressing one of AI’s largest environmental challenges.
Impact on Nvidia and US Tech
Despite DeepSeek still using Nvidia chips, its ability to achieve more with less has raised concerns about the US tech industry’s inefficiency. Many US companies rely on resource-intensive AI models, creating a perception of “bloat” compared to DeepSeek’s streamlined approach.
This development has spurred discussions about the future of AI in the US. Last week, President Donald Trump announced the Stargate Project, a $500 billion initiative to invest in AI data centers, signaling the government’s commitment to maintaining leadership in AI.
Data Privacy Risks
DeepSeek’s open-source model has raised concerns about data security. Like TikTok, DeepSeek must comply with Chinese government requests for user data, as outlined in its privacy policy. This has sparked fears that US companies, eager to explore DeepSeek’s technology, might inadvertently expose sensitive data to Chinese authorities.
