Google Expands AI Mode to More Users in the U.S.

Google is rolling out its experimental AI Mode—first introduced in March—to a wider audience, opening access to millions of Labs users in the United States.
AI Mode is Google’s latest move to stay competitive in the evolving landscape of AI-powered chatbots with search functionality. Unlike the AI Overview feature launched in May (which drew criticism for occasionally pulling information from unreliable or satirical sources like Reddit), AI Mode is designed for interactive, back-and-forth conversation.
Each response includes links to source material, though verifying the information still requires user diligence. AI Mode highlights a small link icon beside each data point; clicking it reveals a preview of the source in the page’s upper-right corner, with a second click taking you to the full website.
More AI Features Are on the Way
Google also announced that AI Mode will soon enhance the Lens feature in its Android and iOS apps. Powered by Gemini AI, this addition allows Lens to interpret entire scenes, not just isolated objects.
In a demo video shared by Google’s PR team, a user points their phone at a bookshelf containing self-help titles. They ask for similar book recommendations and then narrow it down to quicker reads. One suggestion: Daring Greatly by Brené Brown—a fitting title in today’s uncertain world.
