Google Maps Set to Retire Car Mode in 2024: What Users Need to Know

Google Maps is set to undergo a significant change in 2024. Starting from the beginning of the year, the familiar car mode feature within the application will no longer be available. Insights from the app’s coding suggest this impending change.

Recent findings by 9to5Google in version 14.52 of the Google app reveal two specific lines related to the Google Maps Car Mode for Android. One line indicates that this view will vanish come February, while another mentions using the microphone for actions like calling, messaging, or playing media via the Assistant.

While voice-only interactions might be considered safer, there are concerns about this shift. Not everyone prefers using voice-activated features, and there’s potential inconvenience if the Assistant misinterprets commands or can’t execute specific tasks.

For those familiar with it, the “Google Maps Car” mode activates once navigation starts. This mode provides a streamlined interface with easy access to the Assistant, Google Maps, and a selection of media apps such as music, podcasts, and audiobooks. The layout, featuring large buttons, is designed for effortless use while driving.

The reason behind this decision remains unclear. We’ll have to await further updates or clarifications from Google to understand the reason behind this change.
