Google Teases Android 16 Features Ahead of I/O with Special Preview Show

You don’t need to wait for the main Google I/O keynote to get a glimpse of Android’s future. Google has announced a special online preview ahead of the event, aimed at highlighting the latest developments in Android.
Titled The Android Show: I/O Edition, the pre-recorded webcast is scheduled to premiere at 10 a.m. PT on May 13. A brief 29-second teaser posted by Google on YouTube features Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, offering a short but enthusiastic invitation—without revealing any major details.
“Hey everyone, I’m Sameer,” he begins in the clip, standing before a display of Android devices. “This year, we’ve got something exciting: The Android Show: I/O Edition. Make sure to tune in on May 13 to see what’s new with Android.”
The show is expected to offer a closer look at Android 16, currently in its third beta as of March. Although the full unveiling will likely take place during the main I/O keynotes and technical sessions, this sneak peek may hint at some of the new features in store.
According to early beta notes and developer previews, Android 16 could bring back lock-screen widgets, introduce AI-generated notification summaries for messaging apps, add new ways to securely manage health data, and strengthen security controls.
Some may argue these changes don’t quite warrant a full version upgrade—especially when compared to Apple’s privacy tools, like selectively sharing parts of your contacts list with apps. Still, we won’t have to wait long to see the full pitch. As Samat says in the teaser: “Whoa, May 13—that’s coming up fast.”
