Growing Use Of Drones in Industrial and Government Sectors

From advertising to food delivery, firefighting, defence, construction and agriculture, the sectors that use drones today are increasingly diverse.

According to Statista, US consumer drone sales to dealers exceeded $1.25 billion in 2020. Goldman Sachs forecasts the overall drone market size at $100 billion, fuelled by this growing demand for drones in the commercial and government sectors.

The proliferation of drones

In history, drones first appeared at the start of World War I when they were used for military attacks against enemies. The design and application of drones have evolved considerably from their first models which were radio controlled aircraft.

In 2013, Amazon announced its interest in this technology and worked to make it available to the general public. In recent years, drones have become particularly popular.  But despite their popularity with the general public, some predicted that these devices would soon disappear and that they were only a technology dedicated to entertainment that lacked longevity. But in the professional world, it’s a whole different story.

What are the current applications?

Drones are experiencing rapid development as they provide safety and efficiency to many industries. They now come in all shapes and sizes, while helping many sectors such as agriculture, construction, rescue and firefighting. Drones help farmers predict the spread of diseases in crops and assess their yield. This technology allows farmers to produce crops more sustainably.

From agriculture to delivery while waiting for passenger transport?

For its part, BARQ EV, a supplier of smart and sustainable mobility solutions, aims to change the world of delivery in cities. By replacing Gas-powered two-wheelers with drones, the company aims to reduce carbon emissions and traffic on the roads.

What about passenger transport provided by drones?

That’s probably the next step. The race is indeed already launched at a time when companies are striving to be the first drone manufacturer to release a fully operational model. While this technology raises obvious safety issues for passengers and pedestrians, its pioneers will certainly have to overcome many legal and administrative obstacles before actually entering this segment.

Drone Market Trends and Forecasts

Enterprise drones have the greatest potential in the broader drone market. Insider Intelligence defines corporate drones as any unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sold directly to a company for use in its operations. Using this criterion, Insider Intelligence predicts that total global shipments will reach 2.4 million in 2023, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 66.8%. Drone growth will occur in five main segments of the corporate industry: agriculture, construction and mining, insurance, media and telecom, and law enforcement.
