How to Check Your Laptop’s Battery Health in Windows

Batteries keep our devices running, but they degrade over time. Fortunately, Windows provides a Battery Report tool that helps determine whether your laptop’s battery is still in good shape or needs replacing. With a simple command, you can generate a detailed report on battery performance, capacity history, and estimated lifespan.

Here’s how to generate and interpret the report on both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Generating a Battery Report on Windows 10

You’ll need to use Windows PowerShell, a built-in command-line tool. Follow these steps:

  1. Open PowerShell:
    • Right-click the Start menu and select Windows PowerShell (Admin).
    • If prompted for permission, click Yes.
  2. Run the Battery Report Command:
  • In the PowerShell window, type the following command and press Enter:

    powercfg /batteryreport /output “C:\battery-report.html”

  • This command generates an HTML file with the battery report and saves it to the C drive under the name battery-report.html.
  1. Access the Report:
    • Open File Explorer and navigate to **C:**.
    • Locate the battery-report.html file and double-click it to open in your default web browser.

Generating a Battery Report on Windows 11

The process is similar to Windows 10 but uses Windows Terminal instead of PowerShell.

  1. Open Windows Terminal:
    • Right-click the Start menu and select Windows Terminal (Admin).
    • Click Yes to allow changes to your device.
  2. Run the Battery Report Command:
  • In the Terminal window, type:

    powercfg /batteryreport /output “C:\battery-report.html”

  • Press Enter to create the report.
  1. Find the Report:
    • Open File Explorer, go to **C:**, and locate the battery-report.html file.
    • Open it in your web browser.

Understanding the Battery Report

Once opened, the report provides several key insights:

  • Basic System Information: Details about your laptop and battery specifications.
  • Recent Usage: Tracks when your laptop was on battery power versus plugged in.
  • Battery Usage: Shows power consumption over the last three days.
  • Usage History: Displays long-term battery performance trends.
  • Battery Capacity History: Compares the original capacity (Design Capacity) to the current full charge capacity, revealing how much the battery has degraded.
  • Battery Life Estimates: Predicts how long your battery should last versus how long it actually lasts based on wear and usage.

What to Do if Your Battery is Failing

If the report shows significant degradation, you may notice shorter battery life. Here are some options:

✔️ Extend Battery Life: Reduce brightness, close unused apps, and enable battery saver mode.
✔️ Replace the Battery: If the capacity is severely reduced, consider getting a new battery or replacing your laptop.
