How to Merge Photos on Your iPhone Using Apple’s Shortcuts App

Apple Photos has grown more sophisticated over the years, but many people still rely on third-party photo-editing apps to combine multiple pictures into one file. However, you may not need these external tools. Instead, you can use Apple’s Shortcuts app, which is likely already installed on your phone.
The Shortcuts app, as the name suggests, is a free tool designed to help you perform tasks more quickly or automate them. Here’s a step-by-step guide to using it to merge photos on your iPhone.
Create a Shortcut to Merge Photos
First, open the Shortcuts app or download it from the App Store if you don’t have it installed. The app features numerous pre-made shortcuts by Apple, and you also have the option to create your own personalized shortcuts. To merge photos, you’ll need to create a new shortcut. Once set up, you can simply select the photos you want to combine in the future.
On the Shortcuts tab, click the plus (+) icon in the top right corner of the screen. Rename the shortcut to something like “Merge Photo Horizontal” for easy identification. To create another shortcut for vertical merges, tap the Add Action button, then search for “photo” and tap Select Photos.
Select Photos
Next, click the arrow button next to Select Photos to open a drop-down menu, and toggle the Select Multiple switch to on. Return to the search bar at the bottom of the screen, search for “image,” and tap Combine Images. The default setting is to combine images horizontally, but you can change it to vertical or grid if needed.
Search for “photo” again, select Save Photo to Album, and tap Done. To ensure your shortcut appears in the share sheet, hold down the icon of the shortcut you created, tap Details, and toggle on Show in Share Sheet. You can also add the shortcut to your Home screen by tapping Add to Home Screen.
How to Combine Your Photos
To merge photos, open the Photos app and select any image. Tap the Share button in the bottom left corner of your screen, and you’ll see your newly created shortcut named Merge Photo Horizontal. Select it and choose the photos you want to merge.
Pick two (or more) photos in the order you want them to appear from left to right. Click Add in the top right corner, and your phone will instantly merge and save the photos. Check your Camera Roll to see the final result.
Tips for Best Results
Keep in mind that cropping one image smaller than the others can make the final product look mismatched. The same applies to the orientation of the photos. Merging a vertical image with a horizontal one using the horizontal merge shortcut will result in different sizes next to each other.
By following these steps, you can easily merge photos on your iPhone using the Shortcuts app, eliminating the need for third-party photo-editing applications.
