Meta is seizing the opportunity left by ByteDance’s CapCut being removed from U.S. app stores by introducing its own video-editing app, called Edits.
In a video shared on Sunday, Instagram Head Adam Mosseri described Edits as more than just an editing tool, calling it “a full suite of creative tools for passionate mobile video creators.” He clarified that the app isn’t aimed at desktop users or those looking for pre-made templates but rather for individuals who create short-form videos directly on their phones.
The announcement comes on the heels of ByteDance apps, including TikTok and CapCut, being pulled from the App Store and Play Store due to a U.S. law requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok to a U.S.-based company by January 19. With no sale finalized, Google and Apple faced fines of $5,000 per user, leading to the apps’ removal. While TikTok has since been reinstated following a tentative assurance from former President Donald Trump, CapCut and other ByteDance apps remain unavailable as of now.
Mosseri refrained from addressing the TikTok situation directly, instead emphasizing Meta’s commitment to providing creators with robust tools. “No matter what happens, it’s our job to deliver compelling creative tools for video creators—not just for Instagram, but for other platforms too,” he said.
Edits will include features like a dedicated tab for trending audio and inspiration, tools for managing ideas, a higher-quality camera, and options to share drafts with friends or collaborators. The app will also offer analytics for videos shared on Reels. Users can create videos up to 10 minutes long, and AI-powered features, such as animating images, will also be included.
Currently, Edits is available for preorder on the App Store, with an Android release planned soon. Mosseri noted that the app would officially launch next month, with early access given to select creators for feedback. He also cautioned that the initial version would be a work in progress, asking users to remain patient during its development.
