Midlife Health Woes? Magnesium Deficiency Might Be to Blame

Magnesium deficiency is increasingly recognized as a potential cause of common midlife issues such as insomnia, low mood, and brain fog. This nutrient, essential for over 600 biochemical reactions in the body, is vital for energy production, nervous system function, blood pressure regulation, blood glucose control, stress management, and sleep. Despite its importance, magnesium deficiency often goes undiagnosed due to a lack of routine testing, manifesting in symptoms like mood changes, migraines, and sleep disturbances.

Research underscores magnesium’s benefits for brain and heart health, showing it can reduce risks of mild cognitive impairment, improve cognitive function, lower anxiety, and decrease the likelihood of heart attacks and high blood pressure. Current dietary guidelines recommend 300mg of magnesium per day for men and 270mg for women, but many fall short due to modern, highly processed diets which lack sufficient micronutrients.
