Mozilla support for Windows 7 and 8.1 ends in 2023
Mozilla is currently considering two scenarios regarding Firefox support on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Google has already announced that this support for Chrome will end in February 2023.
Mozilla teams are considering two options: end support for Firefox on Windows 7 and 8.1 as early as January 2023, or continue to update Firefox on older versions of Windows until August 2023, when the browser will update to a new version. Extended Support (ESR).
According to Mozilla data, just over 15% of Firefox users currently have a PC running Windows 7, and 2.85% use Windows 8.1. Mozilla therefore knows that your choice of support will be important, especially for Windows 7 owners. But regardless of the January or August choice, support will end in 2023.
What will happen to users? They can continue to use Firefox if they want to. However, there will be no more updates, either for new features or security patches (it will be the same scenario for Chrome). An alternative is to switch to a browser that will still be compatible with Windows 7 or 8.1…. which is starting to be rare. Otherwise, you must switch to Windows 10 or 11 to continue getting Firefox updates.
