OpenAI Responds to Criticism Over ChatGPT’s Overly Agreeable Personality

AI platforms like Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and others are evolving rapidly, receiving frequent updates to enhance their features and user experience. However, not all recent changes have been well received. OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, is now revisiting some updates after noticing they affected the assistant’s personality in a negative way.
On Sunday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to X to acknowledge the issue, stating, “The last couple of GPT-4o updates have made the personality too sycophant-y and annoying (even though there are some very good parts of it), and we are working on fixes asap, some today and some this week.”
Many users have echoed similar frustrations online. Some say ChatGPT now feels overly agreeable and too personal. A widely discussed post on the ChatGPT subreddit titled “Why is ChatGPT so personal now?” has attracted hundreds of comments, with users noting the assistant now seems more interested in agreeing than offering thoughtful pushback.
In another discussion on the Artificial Intelligence subreddit, a user asked, “Is ChatGPT feeling like too much of a ‘yes man’ to anyone else lately?” They pointed out that the tool used to offer more constructive criticism, which they found more valuable.
OpenAI appears to have taken notice of this feedback. The latest significant update to ChatGPT was released on Friday, April 25. That update aimed to enhance STEM-related problem-solving and fine-tune how memory is saved. It also included smaller, less noticeable adjustments to the assistant’s overall behavior.
According to OpenAI’s release notes, the recent tweaks were intended to make the assistant more proactive and to steer conversations in a more productive direction.
In addition to these personality changes, OpenAI recently rolled out a new “Deep Research” feature to all users, including those on the free tier. While this tool offers up to five uses per month for non-subscribers, competitors like Perplexity allow more frequent access, offering five queries per day.
