Religious Leaders call on Meta to remove ‘Instagram for Kids’ feature
Meta is about to bring a new feature to Instagram for kids, but religious leaders aren’t happy about it. For this, 70 Religious Leaders have written a letter to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, in which they have suggested to stop this plan completely. They say that children’s brains are not fully matured and social media use children as tools for their profit by doing data mining in a wrong way. This has a bad effect on the children.
Earlier, Instagram was planning to bring a new feature photo sharing app for children. Facebook had to stop it in September after a lot of protests.
Questions have been raised on the safety of young users
Instagram’s parent company Meta (Facebook) has raised many questions on mental health and the safety of young users following an internal report leaked by whistleblower Frances Hogen a few months ago. Apart from this, in December, a Senate panel has also questioned the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, regarding the online safety of children. Despite such risks, the US government is also investigating Meta for promoting Instagram among children.
Meta company has clarified on this, according to which the leaked document is being used to malign the image of the company. The company has defended the Instagram for Kids feature, saying that the idea is to allow young users to interact with the safe service.
The company further explained that like other social media sites, Instagram also prohibits children under the age of 13 from joining the platform.
Using references from the Bible, the Quran, Pope Francis, and Buddhist monk and various religion groups have met with Zuckerberg and told him that religion is very important to us. Therefore, the company should think about it both in a secular and spiritual way.
To increase the number of users on its platform, Meta formed a team of religions last year and rolled out a new feature that allows users to send and pray on the site. They sent mini equipment kits for streaming worship during the Pandemic and also Organized its First Virtual Event.
