Russia Blocks Google News, Cites Ukraine Conflict

Russia blocks Google News; Before this, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have also been banned.

Amidst the ongoing war with Ukraine, Russia has banned Google News Service in the country for spreading fake news about the Ukraine war. Russia’s move is believed to be a response to Google’s move to shut down its advertising business in Russia for apps and YouTube.

Actually, Russia’s communications regulator has taken this action against Google News. Aljazeera said in a report that they were blocking Google’s news aggregator service from Alphabet Inc. The regulator has alleged that Google is spreading false news about Russian military operations in Ukraine.

Google said in a statement that some people are having difficulty accessing the Google News app and website in Russia and this is not due to a technical fault on our part. We have worked hard to bring news to the people of Russia.

Russia’s move comes after Google recently said it would not help apps and YouTube channels sell ads with content that is believed to take advantage of or condemn the conflict in Ukraine. In addition, Google announced earlier this month that it would stop selling all online ads in Russia.
