Samsung to Build World’s Largest Processor Factory, Boosting Production Capacity
TSMC has emerged as the world’s largest chipmaker since entering into a partnership with Apple, owing to its foundry’s capability to achieve finer etching, with production of 3nm chips already in progress. Samsung, once a leader in the mobile chip industry, is now striving to respond by unveiling plans for a colossal investment of $230 billion by 2042. This sizeable amount will enable Samsung to construct the world’s largest electronic chip factory.
The South Korean government put pressure on the company for this pharaonic project that should lead to the construction of 5 semiconductor factories in the suburbs of Seoul. This mega chip production site is also expected to attract around 150 diverse suppliers.
Samsung to invest $230 billion in foundry
It remains to be seen how this massive investment will fit into the US$360 billion investment plan that Samsung announced last year, an amount still destined for the semiconductor market but also for biotechnologies aimed at health. The South Korean glove still has plans to produce chips (probably Exynos) as efficient as those that TSMC will manufacture for Apple, at least until 2027.
