The post, described as “notes on advances in technology and real-world impact,” outlines Microsoft’s priorities for the coming year and why he believes it’s time to move past debates framed as “AI slop versus sophistication.”
Reflecting on the transition from 2025 into 2026, Nadella writes that the coming year will again be pivotal for artificial intelligence, but in a different way. He says the industry has shifted from exploration to broad deployment, where the key distinction is no longer hype versus amazement, but showmanship versus real usefulness. According to Nadella, we now have a clearer picture of where AI technology is going - along with the harder question of how it should shape society.
Nadella also argues that the discussion should return to an older idea popularized by Steve Jobs: computers as “bicycles for the mind.” He emphasizes that AI shouldn’t be treated as a replacement for human intelligence, but as something that supports and amplifies it. In his view, what matters most isn’t the raw strength of any specific model, but how thoughtfully people put it to work in products and daily life.
He suggests that the next phase of AI requires rethinking product design, human-AI interaction, and how these tools enhance human capability rather than substitute for it. Microsoft, meanwhile, is continuing to build more advanced AI systems to improve Copilot and its broader AI platforms - but Nadella stresses that the true impact will depend on how people choose to use those systems, not just how powerful they are.
