Seamless AI Switching: Import Your Memories and Chats into Gemini

We believe the most effective AI assistant is one that truly understands you - your preferences, your history, and the context behind your conversations. At the same time, switching to a new assistant that starts from zero can feel overwhelming if you’re used to something more personalized.

To make that transition easier, we’re rolling out simple new tools for consumer accounts that let you transfer your memories, context, and chat history from other AI platforms directly into Gemini.

Helping Gemini understand you

Beginning today, a new memory import feature allows you to bring important personal context into Gemini with minimal effort. Once imported, Gemini can recognize key details you’ve previously shared elsewhere - such as your interests, relationships, or background - so you don’t have to repeat yourself or start fresh.

To use this feature, go to Settings and choose the import option. You’ll be given a prompt to paste into your current AI assistant, which will generate a summary of your preferences. Copy that summary back into Gemini, and it will quickly process and securely store the information for future conversations.

Bringing your conversations with you

Gemini’s Personal Intelligence capabilities already enhance responses by drawing from connected services like Gmail, Photos, Search history, and prior Gemini chats - with your permission. This allows it to go beyond basic facts and incorporate meaningful context, like details from a past discussion about planning a trip.

Now, we’re expanding this further by enabling full chat history imports. You can upload a ZIP file containing conversations from other AI tools and continue them seamlessly within Gemini. You’ll also be able to search through past discussions and build on them without losing continuity.

As part of this update, the “past chats” feature will be renamed to “memory,” reflecting its broader role in creating a more personalized and cohesive experience.
