Shipwreck Discovery: 10000 feet long ship that was sunk in Antarctica 100 years ago
Discovery of Ancient Shipwreck: The explorers said it is a milestone in history. The Endurance ship departed Britain in 1914 and reached McMurdo Sound in Antarctica after a year’s voyage.
A ship sank about 107 years ago off the coast of Antarctica. The HMS Endurance ship belonged to polar explorer Ernest Shackleton. Now the wreckage of this ship has been found which is present in very good condition. The 9842-foot-long ship sank in 1915 in the Weddell Sea, a pocket in the Southern Ocean along the northern coast of Antarctica, south of the Falkland Islands. It was discovered jointly by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust and History Hit.
Manson Bound, the mission’s director of exploration, said in a statement, “I have never seen the wreck of a wooden ship like this. It is upright, intact and in excellent condition of conservation. It is a milestone in polar history. The Irish-British explorer Shackleton had long been exploring the South Pole. He had conducted a total of four search operations in this area.
Ship Stuck in Ice
The Endurance ship departed Britain in 1914 and reached McMurdo Sound in Antarctica after a year’s voyage. This voyage was named the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Due to extreme conditions, the ship got stuck amidst thick and hard ice in the Weddell Sea. The 28 people aboard the ship, including Shackleton himself, abandoned Endurance and set up camp on the floating ice surface to the north.
The team won even after the mission failed
Gradually the team reached the uninhabited Elephant Island from where they were rescued. The campaign proved unsuccessful, but several months after the team’s rescue, without casualties, Shackleton’s leadership ability was seen as a victory. During another similar expedition, Shackleton died on South Georgia Island in 1922 at the age of 47 and was buried there.
