Snapchat to roll out ‘AI Pets’ feature soon

Snapchat led the charge in integrating generative AI into social media, introducing the “My AI” chatbot as an “AI friend.” Fast forward almost a year, and Snapchat is reportedly rolling out another eccentric AI feature – a generative AI pet.

Screenshots from Snapchat+ users, initially discovered by SocialMediaToday, reveal that subscribers are now being offered the chance to create “Custom Bitmoji Pets” as part of their early access to exclusive, experimental, and pre-release features.

With Custom Bitmoji Pets, users can “Use AI to create real or imaginary pets on the Map,” as shown in the screenshots. Essentially, the pet you design will appear beside you on the Snapchat map, letting your friends not only see your Bitmoji but also one of the pets you’ve conjured whenever they check your geolocation.

If you’re wondering about the purpose, you’re not alone. Since Snapchat’s initial introduction of generative AI , the platform has been criticized for implementing it without addressing real issues.

Many users have expressed discomfort with the “My AI” feature, deeming it unhelpful and somewhat eerie. Regrettably, the only way to remove it is by purchasing a Snapchat+ membership, costing $3.99 per month or $29.99 per year. As for how to rehome an AI pet – the answer remains elusive.
