South Korea: Presidential Election turned into ‘Dogfight’

During the campaign for the presidential election in South Korea, candidates threw so much dirt at each other that people also got upset. Especially the candidates of the governing Democratic Party and the People Power Party were seen making very lewd comments.

South Korea’s presidential election is going on in South Korea for the presidency. Here the series of accusations and counter-allegations between the presidential candidates has turned into lewd comments.

Making Poisonous Rhetoric

According to the news published in ‘The Independent’, this chain of comments is going on between Lee Jae-myung of the moderate governing Democratic Party and Eun Suk Yeol of the main conservative opposition People Power Party. The two presidential candidates are seen throwing toxic rhetoric and comments at each other. Both camps refer to each other as Hitler, Beast, and Parasite. Some people are also calling it Netflix’s megahit survival drama ‘The Squid Game Election’. In which people are killed for losing children’s games.

The loser will be arrested!

Meanwhile, there is also speculation in South Korea that the loser of the election will be arrested. Regarding this, senior opposition leader Joon-pyo has written on Facebook that this is a terrible presidential election and the loser may face jail. Please avoid this swamp fight.

Economy affected by Pandemic

The negative campaign of both the candidates in South Korea is happening at a time when the country’s economy has been greatly affected by the Corona epidemic. Competition is on with main ally Washington and top trade partner China. Rival North Korea is testing weapons. Recent opinion polls in South Korea show that both candidates have more critics than supporters. The ‘Dong-e Ilbo’ newspaper there said in an editorial that our national future is going to be bleak by an unpleasant and bitter presidential election. In this we have the option of choosing the lesser of two evils.

Eun Suk Yeol has criticized Lee Jae Myung for his links to the land development scam. At the same time, Lee has denied any connection and has instead tried to link Yoon to the same scam. There have also been attacks on the wives of candidates, both of whom have been forced to apologize on separate scandals. Yoon has described Lee’s party as ‘Hitler’ and ‘Mussolini’. Whereas, a colleague has called Lee’s alleged associates ‘parasites’. Lee’s aides have called Yun “a beast”, a “tyrant” and “an empty can”. At the same time, his wife has been ridiculed for plastic surgery.

Choi Jin, director of the Seoul-based Institute of Presidential Leadership, said this year’s presidential election saw more negative campaigning than any other previous election. Even after the elections, mutual hatred will not end easily. Eun is more popular among older voters and people from the southeast region of Gyeongsang, where previous conservative and authoritarian leaders had come. His supporters generally advocate a strong military alliance with the United States and a tough line on North Korea, and credit previous authoritarian regimes for developing the economy quickly after the Korean War.

Voters have different opinion

Lee enjoys greater support from young people and those in Jeolla Province, a rival region of Gyeongsang in the southwest. His supporters generally want an equal footing in relations with the United States and rapprochement with North Korea. Polls showed that Yoon had a higher approval rating than Lee from voters aged 18 and 29, most of whom became a developed country in South Korea.

Park Sung Min, head of a political consulting firm, said voters of this age have never felt poverty and dictatorship. He is a big critic of China and North Korea. He has friendly feelings towards America and Japan. During a recent TV debate, Yoon and Lee agreed not to launch a politically motivated investigation against the other side if they won, but some people question their integrity.

In a newspaper interview last month, Yoon said that if his government is formed, it will not only investigate wrongdoing but  also investigate the land development scam to which Lee is allegedly linked. Cho Jinman, a professor at Seoul’s Duksung Women’s University, said the new president should call on hardline supporters to exercise restraint and remain calm in the face of political vendetta. Now we have an election race like the ‘squid game’, but it will be the responsibility of the new president to get us out of it.
