Spotify Tests Subgenre Selection in Personalized Playlists for More Precise Recommendations

Music streaming is one of the most popular ways listeners discover new artists, and Spotify continues to experiment with ways to personalize that experience. A new feature currently being tested aims to give users more control by allowing them to select subgenres within its curated “Made for You” mixes.

According to Android Authority, a Reddit user named kwabb spotted the new feature, which adds subgenre selection chips to personalized mixes. Typically, these mixes—such as Jazz Mix, Pop Mix, Rock Mix, or Soul Mix—blend your favorite artists with new suggestions in a broad genre. Now, Spotify appears to be letting some users narrow those recommendations further.

In kwabb’s example, their R&B Mix included options like Alternative R&B, Neo Soul, and Pop R&B. Tapping on one of these chips reportedly rebuilds the entire playlist around that subgenre, instead of just removing songs that don’t match. The user noted it led to “fresh” recommendations beyond the usual lineup.

This test was seen on an iPhone, and PCMag was unable to reproduce the feature on Android or desktop. Other Reddit users also reported limited availability—some seeing it on specific playlists, like Discover Weekly, which included genres such as EDM, Hip Hop, R&B, Reggaeton, and Techno.

It looks like Spotify is gradually rolling out this feature as a test, with no official announcement yet. For those who have access, the subgenre chips appear just below the play button at the top of eligible playlists.
