Thermonator: A Robodog with a Flamethrower
Throwflame, the US flame-thrower company, has introduced the Thermonator, a unique robodog equipped with a flamethrower mounted on its back. Unlike the Terminator, this product is priced at $9,420 and is available for purchase online. Throwflame also offers bulk discounts termed as “wolfpacks” and facilitates government agency orders through a dedicated portal.
The Thermonator, built from a modified Unitree Go1 quadruped robot with added flamethrower capabilities, supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, weighs around 37 pounds, and features LIDAR technology for obstacle avoidance. It can be controlled remotely and has applications in controlled burns for agriculture, ice melting, ecological conservation efforts, and even for entertainment and special effects purposes.
Despite its hour-long battery life limitation, the Thermonator can project flames up to 30 feet, although versions intended for California adhere to state laws with a reduced 10-foot range. Throwflame ships these devices across the US, Canada, and worldwide, albeit with certain legal considerations, such as specific licenses required in Maryland.
While the company suggests potential uses in controlled environments like film sets or conservation efforts, the practical applications of a flamethrower-wielding robodog may be limited outside specialized contexts due to safety and regulatory concerns. Nonetheless, the Thermonator represents an innovative convergence of robotics and pyrotechnics, signaling a niche market catering to diverse customer demands.
