Three Major Industries that Use Position Sensors

It is because their use is essential in heavy machinery. Position sensors are used to determine the movement of objects. They relay their output to a control system that proceeds with an action to correct or adjust the object. Just as there are a variety of industries that benefit from their proper usage, there are many kinds of position sensors. Some examples are the linear position sensor, rotary sensor, and tilt angle sensors.

Five major industries have machinery that uses position sensors:

Transportation

Sensors, in general, are used in aerospace, motorsports, automobiles, ships, and trains. Other features in transportation are pressure, temperature, and transmission sensors. They help maintain the status quo of the machine and make quick adjustments when necessary. In a regular vehicle, the position sensor is in the brakes and clutch. A brake pedal position detection uses a rotary sensor, while the clutch uses permanent-magnetic liner contactless displacement (PLCD) sensor.

Heavy-duty work transportation like a ship or a train uses a linear position sensor as an alternative to a potentiometer. Heavy duty transportation is filled with movement and vibrations. This extra friction reduces the accuracy of the potentiometer’s readings and increases the damage done to the sensor. The discrepancies may cause delayed reaction times which will lead to accidents.

Forestry and logging

Forestry and logging may seem reckless to the outsider, people in the industry know that there is a balance to creating big machines and operating them. It isn’t just about uprooting trees, but also moving them efficiently without creating unnecessary damage (to other trees) and injuries (to bystanders). Position sensors are used in the hydraulic cylinders, relaying the movement of the rams to the central system of the machine. 

Compactness is often required in position sensors in heavy-duty equipment because there is so much that needs to be included. Position sensors come in standard sizes, but they are also customisable. If your project requires something smaller than the usual, it's not a problem.

Manufacturing (factory automation)

Being in the manufacturing business is trying to maintain a robot-like efficiency all the time despite human mistakes and machine failure. In large-scale production, time off can mean millions out the window. Since manufacturing deals with a variety of products, the position sensors used may differ. Paper, cloth, and even baked goods benefit from a linear inductive position sensor. A linear inductive position sensor relays the altitude and the distance in between the rolls; this helps with quality control.

These examples only scratch the surface of what position sensors do. For such a small item, they play an essential role in industries that affect our day to day life. From our daily transportation to the manufacturing of our household items, position sensors work behind the scenes to keep everything efficient.
