TikTok Explores In-App AI Chatbot with User Testing in the Philippines

TikTok, the popular social media platform, is venturing into the realm of AI chatbots with its own creation. The chatbot, named Tako, is currently undergoing testing with selected users in the Philippines. This move comes as social media platforms have been relatively slow in integrating chatbot technology, with Snapchat’s attempt being unsuccessful.

Images of TikTok‘s AI chatbot, shared by the app intelligence firm Watchful.ai, reveal that Tako will reside at the top of the right-hand bar while users scroll through TikTok videos. In one screenshot, a user is shown utilizing the chatbot to gather more information about a video related to King Charles III’s coronation that appeared on their “For You Page” (FYP).

TikTok confirmed the testing of the chatbot via Twitter, explaining that Tako is an AI-powered tool aimed at facilitating search and discovery on the platform. The company emphasized that the current testing phase is limited and involves select users in the Philippines. TikTok expressed its excitement to receive feedback from the community.

The primary objective behind TikTok’s chatbot seems to be driving more views and engagement to its own content. However, the company clarified that there are no current plans for the chatbot beyond the testing phase, indicating that its wider availability within the app may not be imminent.

In a statement to ZDNet, TikTok highlighted its commitment to exploring new technologies that enhance the user experience. The platform aims to create a safe and entertaining space that fosters creativity and cultural expression while utilizing feedback from its community during the development process.
