TikTok Introduces AI-Generated Video Labels to Enhance Content Transparency

TikTok is introducing a new set of labels for videos that were either created with or significantly edited by artificial intelligence. This move is aimed at helping content creators adhere to TikTok’s “synthetic and manipulated media” policy, which was updated earlier this year.

TikTok plans to provide educational videos and resources in the coming weeks to clarify when it is appropriate to use the AI-generated label. Additionally, TikTok has enhanced its algorithm to better identify and tag videos as AI-generated. Furthermore, TikTok will rename its AI effects to explicitly mention their use of AI technology.

The social media giant sought input from experts, including MIT’s Dr. David G Rand, who is leveraging the platform for research on how audiences perceive various AI labels. Dr. Rand emphasizes the importance of platforms establishing effective labeling policies, noting that the term “AI generated” is widely understood across different demographics as referring to content generated by AI.

This marks the third significant change TikTok has made this year concerning synthetic media. Alongside policy updates, TikTok committed to following the Responsible Practices for Synthetic Media guidelines, alongside tech giants like Google, Adobe, and OpenAI. The company also collaborated with Digital Moment to organize roundtables where creators can share their insights on AI-generated content.

TikTok, in tandem with Snapchat, was one of the pioneers in making AI image filters accessible to the public. However, with the rise of AI awareness, platforms like ChatGPT have taken it to the next level. Many TikTok creators utilize AI filters to craft their content, so users can expect to see the AI-generated label implemented soon. TikTok has announced plans to commence testing the AI-generated labels this week.
