U.S. Moves Closer to Banning TP-Link Routers Over National Security Concerns

The United States has taken another significant step toward banning the sale of TP-Link routers nationwide.
After months of investigation, the Commerce Department’s proposed restriction on TP-Link has gained support from several key federal agencies, including the Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Defense, according to sources.
This endorsement allows the Commerce Department to begin the formal process of enforcing the ban. Under the procedure, TP-Link must first be officially notified and will then have 30 days to submit a response. Once the company’s reply is received, the agency will have an additional 30 days to review the arguments before making a final decision.
Sources familiar with the matter told The Post that the Commerce Department believes a full ban is the only effective measure, citing TP-Link’s connections to China as a potential national security risk.
The delay in moving forward could be linked to ongoing trade discussions between the U.S. and China, which recently led to a temporary easing of economic tensions.
Concerns over TP-Link’s products have been circulating among U.S. lawmakers and officials for at least a year. They argue that because the company was founded in China and continues to maintain a headquarters there, it could be compelled by the Chinese government to engage in espionage or cyber intrusions targeting U.S. networks or corporations.
Although no direct evidence has surfaced to prove such spying activities, American officials maintain that TP-Link routers have vulnerabilities that could make them susceptible to hacking or exploitation.
For its part, TP-Link has rejected these claims, calling them baseless and misleading. The company points out that its U.S. operations—run by TP-Link Systems, based in Irvine, California—became independent from its Chinese parent company in 2022.
