WhatsApp Finally Rolls Out Dedicated iPad App After Years of Demand

After years of anticipation, WhatsApp has officially released a dedicated app for the iPad.

Although the messaging platform—owned by Meta—has been available on iPhones since its debut in 2009 and made its way to Mac devices in 2016, iPad users have long been stuck using the web version. This workaround often involved a clunky sign-in process, frustrating many who had been asking for a native iPad app.

WhatsApp hinted at the long-awaited launch earlier this week via social media, sharing a screenshot that suggests the iPad version mirrors the core features of its mobile counterpart.

Why the Delay?

One of the main hurdles to bringing WhatsApp to the iPad was the challenge of maintaining end-to-end encryption across multiple devices. Originally, WhatsApp Web functioned by simply reflecting conversations from a user’s phone. But in 2021, the platform introduced multi-device support, allowing users to link their account across various devices while still keeping messages secure and private.

By late 2023, Meta had begun beta testing the iPad app, and now, over a year later, it’s officially rolling out to the public.
