WhatsApp Is About to Get Ads—But Not in Your Chats

For years, WhatsApp has stood out among Meta’s platforms by staying free of ads. That’s about to change, though Meta is taking a cautious approach to avoid disrupting the app’s core messaging experience.

The company plans to roll out ads in the Status section, WhatsApp’s version of Instagram Stories. This feature lets users share short videos or images with their contacts, and soon, promotional content will start appearing between these updates. Meta hasn’t specified how frequently ads will show up, but based on similar platforms like Instagram, they may appear after every few stories.

Importantly, WhatsApp won’t mine your private messages for ad targeting. Instead, it will rely on broader data such as your location, preferred language, interactions with public Channels, and previous ad engagement to personalize what you see.

In addition to placing ads in Status, Meta is launching a new monetization option for WhatsApp Channels—a tool used by brands, influencers, and public figures to broadcast updates to large audiences. Soon, channel owners will be able to charge followers for premium content, much like subscription services on Patreon. Free content will still be available, but exclusive features or updates could be locked behind a paywall.

Meta says that every day, roughly 1.5 billion users engage with Status and Channels. For now, these ads will be limited to that space, but if the strategy proves successful, more parts of the app could include advertising in the future.
