WhatsApp Plus in Testing: Meta May Add Premium Themes, Icons, and 20 Pinned Chats

Meta is reportedly exploring a new optional subscription tier for WhatsApp called WhatsApp Plus, aimed at giving users additional personalization and enhanced chat management features. The proposed plan would not affect the core experience of the messaging platform, meaning regular messaging, voice calls, video calls, and other essential tools would continue to remain free for all users.

According to reports, the subscription could introduce several customization options designed to make the app feel more personal. Users may be able to apply custom themes to change the look and feel of the interface. The plan may also include a selection of 14 alternate app icons, allowing users to modify how the app appears on their phone’s home screen. In addition, subscribers could gain access to exclusive notification sounds and ringtones, adding another layer of personalization.

Beyond visual changes, the premium plan could expand some of the app’s practical features. One example is the ability to pin up to 20 chats at the top of the conversation list, a significant increase compared with the current limit. This would make it easier for users who manage many conversations to keep their most important chats readily accessible.

The potential introduction of WhatsApp Plus reflects a wider effort by Meta Platforms to generate more revenue from the messaging service. Unlike many other social platforms, WhatsApp relies heavily on private messaging, which makes traditional advertising less effective. Because of this limitation, Meta has been exploring alternative ways to monetize the platform without disrupting the user experience.

A subscription model could provide a steady and predictable revenue stream while allowing the core messaging service to remain free. For users who want additional customization and convenience features, WhatsApp Plus could offer a way to enhance their experience without affecting how others use the app.

Meta has not yet confirmed when or if the feature will roll out widely, as it is still being tested.
