YouTube for Android Tests Redesigned Miniplayer with Picture-in-Picture Feature

YouTube in iPhone screengrab

YouTube for Android is experimenting with a new look for its miniplayer, which functions as an in-app picture-in-picture (PiP) feature.

Currently, the YouTube miniplayer is docked at the bottom of the screen. The video appears on the left side in a cropped format with the name and channel information next to it. Play and close buttons are positioned on the right.

The redesigned miniplayer resembles a picture-in-picture window, allowing users to continue watching videos while browsing YouTube. This new rectangular card has rounded corners that slightly cut into the video and includes a play/pause button, as well as 10-second rewind and skip buttons. The background for these controls adapts to the theme, appearing white or dark accordingly.

One significant improvement is the ability to resize the new miniplayer to span the entire width of the screen. Users can drag the window around the screen like a standard picture-in-picture frame. To close it, you can either tap the ‘x’ button in the top-right corner or move it to the bottom of the screen.

This updated picture-in-picture miniplayer is not yet widely available on YouTube for Android. So far, only one report of this new feature has been received.
