YouTube to Introduce Podcasts: A New Platform for Creators and Listeners

YouTube Music, the subscription-based music streaming service by Google, has recently undergone a graphical revamp and is gearing up to embrace the addition of podcasts. Kai Chuk, the head of YouTube’s podcasting division, shared the news and elaborated on the company’s aim to compete with the leading industry player, Spotify. The latter’s success in expanding and retaining its user base has prompted YouTube to bolster its offerings in this area.
In the near future, when we don’t know exactly, YouTube Music will allow listening to podcasts in the background, completely free, and with ad support and offer “improved library tools”.
Google’s platform is growing, last year YouTube registered 80 million subscribers to its Music and Premium services, but despite the growth, it still remains well below its main competitor, Spotify, which has 200 million subscribers. It seems that, at the moment, the company does not intend to present exclusive and original licensed programs, but to exploit YouTube’s user base of more than 2 billion people, providing an additional tool for those looking for new podcasts.
If someone wants to watch a podcast we have a solution, if someone only wants to listen to a podcast we should have a great experience for that too. However, the focus of YouTube Music’s podcasting features is not just to provide an additional service to users, but also to create great tools for people who make shows; the possibility of making a podcast that is not only audio, but also a video part on a platform such as YouTube, would prove to be an invaluable resource for everyone working in this sector.
The company is also keen to provide some clarification regarding Google Podcasts, the service in question has been active since 2018, available as an application for Android, iOS and on the web, and offers users various functions such as playback speed adjustments with silence, timer, queues, downloads, cast support and new episode notifications.
