Modafinil is a drug used to treat sleep problems and improve brain function. It is in a group of medicines called “wakefulness-promoting medications” because it helps people who get too sleepy during the day stay awake. In the 1970s, a French researcher named Michel Jouvet developed a drug to help people with narcolepsy. After it did well in clinical tests, the US Food and Drug Administration gave it the brand name Provigil in 1998 so it could be used to treat this condition.
