Welcoming the Unwelcome is a Cape York–based cultural project documenting and honouring the lives of First Nations LGBTQIA+ Sistergirls and Brotherboys through portraiture and personal storytelling. Led by Marijke Bassani, a Lama Lama (Lamalama) and Binthi Warra woman, the initiative centres lived experience within the broader context of black rainbow cape york, contributing to truth-telling, visibility and community recognition. Through photography and narrative, the project records contemporary expressions of identity while acknowledging the historical and social impacts of colonisation in the region. The accompanying publication directs proceeds to the featured community members, supporting financial wellbeing and self-determination. Welcoming the Unwelcome also hosts community gatherings, including the Black Rainbow Homecoming, creating culturally grounded spaces for connection, reflection and collective strength.
