From Tahitian pape (“water”) + Tahitian ʻete (“basket”) (cognate with Māori kete, Niuean kato, 'Are'are kato, Hawaiian ʻeke (“sack”). This probably refers to the mountains condensing and collecting rain in the Papeete basin.
