Synonyms

Origin

Borrowed from Georgian საქართველო (sakartvelo), from Old Georgian საქართველო (sakartvelo), from ქართველი (kartveli, “(adjective) of Georgian descent; (noun) person from Georgia”) + სა- -ო (sa- -o, circumfix forming words relating to the concept or thing which the stem to which it is attached refers). ქართველი (kartveli) is ultimately derived from Proto-Kartvelian *kart- (“eastern Georgia; Georgian people”) (whence ქართლი (kartli, “Kartli, historical region of Georgia in the central and eastern part of the country”)).
