From Old French Tartarie, from Medieval Latin Tartaria (“land of the Tartars”), from Old Turkic 𐱃𐱃𐰺 (t¹t¹r¹) , spelling influenced by Latin Tartarus (“Hell (in Greek mythology)”), from Ancient Greek Τάρταρος (Tártaros).
