Specialist referrals cannot be made over the phone. You must see your doctor prior to your specialist appointment to arrange a referral. A consultation with a doctor is required for a referral to a medical specialist as it is important that the referral is appropriate and the relevant medical information is included for the specialist. Referral periods are generally for a period of 12 months. Repeat referrals do require an appointment with your doctor.
