Build A Rustic Wardrobe Yourself – Step-By-Step Instructions

Are you looking for an individual wardrobe that underlines your living style, but can’t find anything suitable? Then build your wall wardrobe yourself with our step-by-step instructions.

The cloakroom requires only a few materials and is easy to implement, even for beginners. First of all, the concrete material and tool list:

  • 2 boards 60 x 12, 2 cm thick
  • 3 boards 80 x 15, 3 cm thick
  • Coat hook of your choice
  • pencil
  • 40 mm long screws
  • small screws 20 mm long (for coat hooks)
  • Saw, jigsaw
  • Sandpaper and sanding block
  • Cordless screwdriver or screwdriver

Step-by-step instructions

Once you have the material and all the tools ready, you can start. First of all, a short note about the wood required: This can also be used. Perhaps a floor is being renewed in your area and the old floorboards and floorboards are no longer needed – excellent. Most of the time, these are still in good condition and ideally suited for the cloakroom project. It is important that it is solid wood in any case, chipboard or MDF boards should be avoided.

If you don’t dare to build a wardrobe yourself, but don’t want to forego individuality, I recommend stopping by the furniture delivery company Pharao24.de. The selection of individual cloakrooms is enormous and the offer is also clearly arranged. If you want a similar panel-style wardrobe to the one we present in our instructions, you will immediately find what you are looking for in the corresponding category. The wardrobe of your choice can also be supplemented with matching shoe cabinets, dressers or with matching cloakroom tables, thus putting together your very own, unique wardrobe.

Step 1: Determine The Floor Plan

First lay the two shorter boards across in front of you. These two boards form the back wall of the cloakroom and at the same time represent the contact surface with the wall. The distance between the two boards is approximately 20 cm. The longer boards are attached perpendicularly to these two boards, so now lay them up vertically. Leave a smaller or larger space between the vertical boards, depending on your preference.

You can design the cloakroom so that the transverse boards protrude on the sides or are not visible.

»Tip: It looks particularly nice with individually shaped boards if they protrude on the sides.

Once you have arranged the boards, you can now determine the outline of the two outer boards. To do this, draw with a pencil how far you want to round off the top corners. The curves can be designed symmetrically or asymmetrically.

Step 2: Sawing off

After you have determined the outline, saw off the excess wood along your mark. Also remember to saw off the cross boards if you do not want them to be visible later.

Step 3: Sanding

It is advisable to sand the boards afterwards, always parallel to the wood fibers. 80 grit sandpaper is well suited for this. A second sanding is done with 120 grit. If you want to have the boards for your future wardrobe completely smooth, you can go over them a third time with 180 grit sandpaper. The boards should be sanded.

Step 4: Putting The Wardrobe Together

Now lay the three sanded boards vertically in front of you. The sides to which the hooks will later be attached point downwards. Now place the two transverse boards on the back of the boards pointing upwards. Now use the screws to connect the transverse and lengthways boards with each other with two screws. So there are two screws in each point of contact between the lengthwise and cross boards. Sometimes it may be necessary to pre-drill the holes for the screws.

Step 5: Apply Paint

If you want to add color to the wardrobe, you need to apply the color now.

In the event that you do not want to change the color of the wardrobe any further, you should still apply a good wood oil.

In both cases you will now have to wait for the paint or oil to dry. Information on this can be found on the product packaging.

Step 6: Attach Coat Hooks

The last step is to attach the coat hooks. For this purpose, it is advisable to place the coat hooks on the two outer boards a little lower than on the middle board. Then fasten the hooks with the small screws with a hand screwdriver or cordless screwdriver.

»Tip: If you still have material left, you can design a key rack in the same style as the cloakroom. To do this, sand and paint the wood and then attach slightly smaller hooks.

Finally, something about the color scheme.

With a final coat you not only give your wardrobe some color, the coat also serves as wood protection. Since the cloakrooms are mostly in the house, they are hardly exposed to the weather. A little wood protection is still useful. On the website of the consumer advice center you will find important tips for the correct selection of wood preservatives, especially if they are to be used indoors.

  • Glaze

When you apply a glaze, the wood grain remains visible. A glaze penetrates the upper layers of the wood, protects the wood and, if you opt for a color glaze, can also give the wood a color note without covering the wood look. Coatings with glazes therefore look very natural.

  • Wood varnish

With the clear lacquer, you also get the wood look. However, due to the varnish that surrounds the wood, wood no longer looks completely natural. In the case of colored paint, the wood grain is no longer visible after painting. For this reason, painting with colored lacquer is suitable if you want to add strong color accents in the wardrobe.
