Discovery of a large Coral Reef in the depths of the Ocean, near Tahiti
This is a discovery as rare as it is magnificent! A large coral reef, located in the depths of the Pacific Ocean, was recently discovered not far from Tahiti.
The news was announced on January 20, 2022 by UNESCO, which supervised the team of researchers to whom we owe this discovery, carried out as part of the 1 Ocean mission.
A deep coral reef discovered near Tahiti
The reef, which experts consider to be in good health, is 3 kilometers long and about ten meters wide. Comprised of large rose-shaped corals, some of which can reach 2 meters in diameter, it is found at depths between 30 and 65 meters below the water surface, making it almost unique. .
This is indeed a rare discovery because most of the known coral reefs in the world are not found in such deep areas. Usually, this type of reef is located in depths not exceeding 25 meters.
If we are to believe the description of our colleagues from Le Monde, this site is “endowed with an exceptionally high coral cover” and arouses the curiosity, even the fascination of scientists because it could well be one of the largest, if it is the largest deep reef in the world.
Extending over several hectares, it is, moreover, in a perfect state of conservation!
Member of the UNESCO Mission at the origin of this discovery, Lætitia Hédouin (biologist at the Center for Island Research and Environmental Observatory) was able to observe that this reef did not suffer from the major bleaching episode. which affected Polynesian corals in 2019.
“We believe that the deeper reefs are perhaps better protected from global warming”, explained the latter.
